Pediatric Dermatology Masterclass - Basic Course

Pediatric Dermatology - Basic Course modules provide an extensive overview of pediatric skin disorders, highlighting key differences between children and adults in the presentation of skin conditions. The course highlights the importance of tailored treatment plans and discusses strategies for managing specific pediatric conditions such as cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions, drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS), erythema multiforme, viral exanthems, and neonatal rashes. Participants will also learn to identify birthmarks and superficial fungal infections that require intervention, and master KOH examination techniques, ensuring they are well-prepared to provide optimal care for young patients.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify key differences in the presentation of skin disorders in children versus adults.
  • Learn to appropriately manage pediatric patients with skin disease, with special emphasis on our knowledge of natural history/outcomes and optimal treatment strategies in children.
  • Develop a treatment plan for pediatric patients with skin disease, recognizing similarities and differences from adult patients.
  • Learn the clinical approach to the evaluation and initial management of cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions in children.
  • Identify key features of DIHS, work-up, and management.
  • Identify the classic morphologic findings and triggers for erythema multiforme. Distinguish between erythema multiforme and other hypersensitivity reactions in children, including Serum sickness-like reactions and Urticaria multiforme.
  • Recognize common presentations of pediatric viral exanthems and develop a clinical approach to evaluation and initial management of typical viral exanthems.
  • Identify which birthmarks require diagnostic work-up or intervention.
  • Distinguish benign neonatal rashes from conditions that require diagnostic and therapeutic intervention (such as skin infections and inherited conditions).
  •  Identify the morphologies of pediatric superficial fungal infections and learn KOH examination techniques with their result interpretations.
  • Gain insights on the recommendations on an initial treatment plan for a child with tinea capitis and diaper candidiasis.
